Angle of Reflection vs Specularity

July 6, 2010

(I shot this with model Katrina.)

The angle of reflection based on the angle of incidence (angle of which the light strikes the surface) will determine how your camera captures the specularity of the subject.  If you position your lights or your camera away from the angle of reflection, you can avoid specular highlights that you may not want.  In the above picture, you can see from her eye glass that the lens on the right eye, I was able to angle my camera to not capture the specular off of the softbox positioned on the model’s right side.  I didn’t totally avoid it however on the left lens of the glasses.
