Reflector for Fill and Sparkle

June 16, 2010

(I shot this in Dumbo, Brooklyn right underneath a tree.)

I used the reflector on the above shot to fill in the shadow caused by the tree that she is lying by.  It also adds a nice sparkle to the eyes.  The main downside to using a reflector is that they can be blindly bright.  So much so that the model could hardly keep her eyes open.  The trick to helping her along is to tell her to only open her eyes on the count of three.  If you are going to be shooting a lot of shots this way, just remember that this could be way too blinding for the subject since the light intensity is continuous while a really bright strobe only flashes for a millisecond so the flash effect is tolerable.  I would only use the reflector for a few quick shots, otherwise, I would switch to a strobe.
