Learn what those presets and actions do

May 13, 2010

(I shot this out in Los Angeles with the sun setting.  I used two photoshop actions.  One to warm up the picture and one to add contrast and clarity.)

I’m sure everyone has heard that it is better to teach a man to fish than to just give him some fish.  There are lots of lightroom presets and photoshop actions that look so great when blindly applied to some photographs and look terrible on others.  So, most of us just keep trying different actions/presets until one looks cool.  That’s not bad, but if you really want a less random creative process, try learning what settings these presets/actions have changed so that you can understand how is a certain look achieved.  Tinker around with the settings they changed and you might find yourself liking your own changes better.
