Be Nice to your Models

May 6, 2010

(I shot this with Anelisa using just natural light.)

A lot of portrait photographers have written a lot about getting to know your subjects and making them feel comfortable in front of the lens.  Annie Leibovitz would ask for two days with the client.  One day to get to know them and not shoot at all and then shoot the next day with them.  I’m not suggesting we all need to do that but I do feel like you do need to get to know your subject in the first few minutes.  I usually find the shots in the first few minutes are not as good as the shots later in the session.  It can take time for your subject to get comfortable in front of the lens and start being creative with their expressions and poses.  I think the best thing you can do is be confident about what you want out of the shoot that day and that you are all prepared to make it happen.  Be friendly and show a genuine interest into finding out who this person is.  I mean, you are curious about people you meet aren’t you?   So have fun and maybe you’ll make a friend.
