Desaturation and clothing contrast for cluttered background

April 23, 2010

{Seen on the Web}

You can see, this is a very cluttered background and the subject would be lost in there if not for the fact that she is pale and her clothes are light colored.  The eye is drawn toward the brighter part of the picture so she does get highlighted in that way but you can also tell, there is another element working to make this picture able to work with all this clutter.  That other element is the desaturation of the picture.  I would have preferred if the greenery was darkened a little bit in post processing so that the model and clothes stood out more but the desaturation helps to keep your eyes from getting loss in what is probably a bad mishmash of greens and browns.  It seems from the picture to be an overcast day too so colors would have been bland so better to just mute them all together.   I think the picture would probably have looked better with some late day sunlight or some strobe light added but sometimes you are caught in a hard situation so you have to work with what you got.

    This is beautiful! She reminds me of a fairy that could disappear into the plants, flowers and trees. Love it!

      Yeah, I thought it was a beautiful pic but just the background is a bit messy.

        it is a little messy, but not every photograph can or will be a visually striking contrast and in this case it works well and puts a little whimsy into things.
