B&W for distracting backgrounds

(I shot this by SOHO, NY for a model  at midday)

I find processing a picture in B&W helps when the background colors are too drab or distracting to the subject.  I really liked the expression and pose of the model but the background was really washed out by the midday sun.  The colors of the stores and trees around really didn’t compliment the model so I tried B&W and it put the focus back on the model.
